I’ve been teaching hut building for children in ages between 6-13 in Arkki’s Summer Camps and workshops since 2013.

It’s been wonderful to see how learning can happen trough playing. Building three dimensional structures in 1:1 scale seems to be natural behavior for children and also a very effective way of learning to understand the built environment and architecture.

Building huts outdoors is also a great opportunity to learn to respect the nature and to operate there without causing damage. Most of the hut types and techniques that are used are ancient and can be seen as doorways to learn about past and present cultures and habitation. In this spirit children can freely expolre with different techniques and materials and use all their senses to immerse into the world of building.
